GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A top general, the secretary of state, the White House and political and religious leaders from around the world have decried a plan by the leader of a small Florida church to burn copies of Islam's holiest text to mark the 9/11 attacks. The Rev. Terry Jones is not backing down.
Despite the mounting pressure to call off Saturday's bonfire, Jones said at a Wednesday news conference that he also has received much encouragement, with supporters mailing copies of the Quran to his Dove Outreach Center of about 50 followers. The plan comes as an emotional debate continues over a proposed Islamic center near the ground zero site of the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York.
"As of right now, we are not convinced that backing down is the right thing," said Jones, 58, who took no questions.
Jones was flanked by an armed escort and said he has received more than 100 death threats since announcing in July that he would stage "Internat
The one thing Spiller's careful of is to remind everyone that he can't do it alone.
"It's going to take a team effort to get to where we want to go, and I'm just glad to be a part of that," Spiller said Wednesday. "I mean, it's not going to be a one-man show."
No, but it sure looks that way after Spiller ran away with the job by displaying his dynamic potential this preseason. Despite missing the first week of training camp negotiating his first contract, the ninth player selected in the draft turned out being a quick and electrifying study.
Spiller scored three touchdowns in three preseason games - all against first-stringers - and finished with 26 carries for 122 yards. He added t

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine swept northward through Texas and into Oklahoma on Wednesday, forcing dozens of high-water rescues, swamping city neighborhoods and killing at least two people.
Hermine packed a relatively light punch when it made landfall Monday night, and many residents said they felt unprepared for Wednesday's sudden flooding.
Dallas commuters endured snarled morning rush hour traffic, and the city did shut down one major thoroughfare because of flooding. A series of tornadoes threatened the city Wednesday evening, but there were no immediate reports of damage and city officials were breathing easier because the Dallas was apparently spared the storm's worst.
Arlington, a suburb 22 miles west, wasn't so lucky.
George Lowe, a 67-year-old retiree, said he and his wife, Laura, were surprised by how quickly and badly their neighborhood flooded. Water reached up to 5 feet high in some homes - many just a si

WASHINGTON (AP) - Job openings are rising modestly, a sign that employers may step up hiring soon.
But rising openings in the past year haven't reduced unemployment, heightening concerns that the unemployed might lack the skills to fill the jobs that are coming available. If companies have openings but can't find qualified workers, that will make it even harder to lower the unemployment rate.
Some economists argue that the broader problem is that the economy just isn't generating enough jobs.
The number of jobs advertised rose by 6.2 percent to 3.04 million in July, according to the Labor Department's latest data. That's the highest total since April, when temporary census hiring inflated that month's figure. But even with the increase, total openings remain far below the 4.4 million that existed in December 2007, when the recession began.
Openings have risen 30 percent since July 2009, when they fell to their lowest level on records dati

WASHINGTON (AP) - The economy lost strength in late summer as factory production weakened in areas of the East Coast and Midwest.
A survey the Federal Reserve released Wednesday found the slower growth spreading to more regions of the country.
Of the 12 regions the Fed tracks, economic activity slowed or was mixed in five - New York, Philadelphia, Richmond, Atlanta and Chicago. Activity elsewhere was described as modest or pointed to positive developments.
In the Fed's previous survey in late July, only two regions - Atlanta and Chicago - had reported slower growth.
Reasons for the soft spots varied.
In New York, retailers, especially those in New York City, said sales dropped. Factory production slowed, too. And, both the housing and commercial real-estate markets turned even softer.
Philadelphia reported slower manufacturing and real-estate activity. But retailers' revenue rose, which explained that region's mixed picture.
But in Ric

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Kevin Kolb has Aaron Rodgers on his speed dial.
Kolb began studying Rodgers before he replaced Donovan McNabb as the starting quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. He closely watched how Rodgers handled taking over for Brett Favre in Green Bay, took mental notes and prepared for his time.
That arrived when the Eagles traded McNabb to Washington in April. Naturally, Kolb reached out to Rodgers for some advice. They spoke several times in the offseason, communicated during training camp and even exchanged text messages this week - a little unusual considering the Eagles will host the Packers in the season opener Sunday.
"The big thing I pull from him is how he handled everything, the whole picture, that's with Brett leaving, similar to me with Donovan," Kolb said Wednesday. "Also, it's taking over a good team. It's not like young guys who come in and they're doing a rebuilding thing. We both had good teams co

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit Mayor Dave Bing defended a stretched fire department Wednesday and its response to what he termed "a natural disaster," after wind-whipped flames destroyed dozens of occupied and abandoned homes across the city.
Bing said firefighters confronted conditions "that were not manmade" starting Tuesday afternoon. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph forced flames to jump from house to house, eventually encompassing 85 homes and garages - many abandoned - across several neighborhoods.
No injuries were reported.
When pressed on whether the fire department was adequately staffed, Bing sidestepped the question and pointed out that no one was killed.
"A natural disaster - (that's) what this was," he said at a news conference. "You just cannot plan for that."
Alonzo Rush, 62, a retired auto worker, said it took 90 minutes for a fire truck to arrive, by which time several nearby homes were aflame.
China ranked near the bottom, barely higher than last-place Madagascar.
The report, released Wednesday by the British-based Charities Aid Foundation, showed striking variations in charitable behavior around the world.
For example, it found that only 4 percent of Lithuanians gave money to charity, compared with 83 percent of people in Malta; 61 percent of people in Turkmenistan did volunteer work, compared with 2 percent of Cambodians.
The overall rankings were a composite of three categories - the percentage of people who donated money, donated time and helped a stranger in the month prior to being surveyed.
Australia and New Zealand topped the index with an average score of 57 percent, trailed by Canada and Ireland at 56 percent, and the United S
Riggen could use some good news, but he doesn't think he'll get it from President Barack Obama and the Democratic Party.
"I've been a Democrat all my life, but I don't know any more," Riggen, 52, said as he shared a pizza with his children at a union hall. "Nothing's going right."
It's easy to find others with those same frustrations in Decatur, a central Illinois factory town that churns out mining trucks and turns corn into sweetener.
Decatur embraced Obama in 2008. Voter turnout surged, and he carried some precincts by 85 percent or even 95 percent. Yet now, as in struggling cities across the country, some independents and conservative Democrats - particularly white men who supported Obama before - say they no longer believe Oba

SAN DIEGO (AP) - To Ryan Mathews, there's a distinction: he's following LaDainian Tomlinson, not trying to replace the great running back.
After showing his speed and power in the limited context of exhibition games, Mathews gets to unleash it full-time when the San Diego Chargers begin pursuit of their fifth straight AFC West title Monday night at Kansas City.
Mathews idolized Tomlinson to the point that he wore No. 21 while at Fresno State. On draft day, when the Chargers moved up 16 spots to take Mathews with the 12th pick overall, he suddenly found himself following in L.T.'s cleat marks.
"I'm not L.T. I'm not in here to try to be L.T. or I'm not in here to try to replace him," Mathews said. "He's a legend. What he did here is forever going to stand in the record books. For me looking up to him, I'm in a wonderful position. It's a gift just being able to follow his footsteps and what he did, to be in t

WASHINGTON (AP) - Seldom visible in the Yemeni mountains, the elite U.S. commandos training the Yemen's military represent the Obama administration's quest to fight terrorism without inflaming anti-American sentiment.
That balancing act has become an administration trademark, funneling millions of dollars in aid and low-profile military trainers to countries like Pakistan and Yemen in order to take on a more diverse, independent and scattered al-Qaida network.
The scope and amount of the military training in Yemen has grown slowly, reflecting the Pentagon's intention to tackle the terror threat while still being sensitive to fears that a larger American footprint in Yemen could help fuel the insurgency.
Over the past year, the number of elite U.S. trainers moving in and out of Yemen has doubled, from 25 to about 50 now. The numbers fluctuate depending on the training schedule, but U.S. forces are now providing a more complex level of instruction that combin

RENTON, Wash. (AP) - Mike Williams has never started on opening day in three lackluster NFL seasons.
That tells you immediately how much of a bust the career of the former first-round pick has been.
Now three years removed from his last NFL game, Williams finds himself listed as the starter on Sunday when Seattle opens its season at home against San Francisco.
When Williams was given a second chance this spring by his former coach at Southern California, Pete Carroll, many viewed it as a goodwill gesture toward a former Trojan who never met his potential.
Williams says he heard those doubters and fought to keep out any negativity. The result, he believes, is what has transpired on the field.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (AP) - A suspected American missile strike killed five alleged militants in northwestern Pakistan early Thursday, an intelligence official said, the fourth attack in 24 hours as the U.S. steps up the tactic to keep al-Qaida and its allies under pressure.
The barrage against houses and a vehicle in the mountains close to the Afghan border was one of the most intense since the attacks were stepped up more than two years ago. Most are believed to be fired from unmanned, remote-controlled planes that can hover for hours above the area.
U.S. officials do not publicly acknowledge the strikes but have said privately that they have killed several senior Taliban and al-Qaida militants and scores of foot soldiers in a region largely out of the control of the Pakistani state. Critics say innocents are also killed, fueling support for the insurgency.
The latest attack took place before dawn on a house close to a disused match factory a little more than a mile
President Felipe Calderon's office issued a statement saying he "energetically condemned" the slaying of the mayor of El Naranjo - the third mayor to be killed in Mexico in less than a month.
Amid the violence, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said that Mexico is "looking more and more like Colombia looked 20 years ago, where the narco-traffickers control certain parts of the country, not significant parts."
Her comments raised hackles in Mexico.
"Of course we do not agree with the statement in this regard, given that there are very important differences between what Colombia faced then and what Mexico faces today," Mexican government security spokesman Alejandro Poire said.
Follow him on Twitter? Not a chance.
"I don't follow him because it's just a bunch of nonsense," Lewis said Wednesday. "I don't really care where he goes to eat and so forth, or who he buys dinner for. But I guess (for) a lot of people, that gives them something to do during the day. I have no problem filling my day up."
A lot of Ochocino's tweets involve teammate Terrell Owens, who signed with the Bengals at the start of training camp. The tandem has dubbed themselves "Batman and Robin," and keep a conversation going through their social media networks.
Both have a reality show on VH-1. They're getting a weekly talk show on the Versus cable network - "The T.Ocho Show" - that will run for a half hour starting Oct. 12. They'll discuss their
